“The Fungo Society: A Quick Baseball Mystery by Jeff Stanger is one of the most enjoyable reads I have had in a long while. Sprinkled with wit and the aura of a Philip Marlow mystery, The Fungo Society is an updated version of the old classic whodunit. The dialogue is believable and the characters are fun. Stanger has a firm grasp on light humor that keeps the reader reading and wanting more. While integrating an impressive knowledge of baseball trivia, the author embraces not only baseball card collectors. Mystery fans of the Sue Grafton circle will also enjoy The Fungo Society’s antics, quickly adding Stanger to the book shelf. I hope that Stanger has planned a series of Jonathan Quick stories because this collector wants them all.”

Check the Expiration Date

This weekend, I opened a box of baseball cards from 1989. The gum was so stuck to the back card of each pack, you would have thought it had been glued on. I managed to get it off but didn’t have the courage to taste it. I’m at the age where it would take a dare and...

The Citizen Waymo Controller

This past week, you may have seen the story about renegade Waymo taxis getting stuck in a cul-de-sac in suburban Atlanta. Most people were horrified by the possibilities of self-driving cars going rogue. Me? I saw an opportunity… If you’ve never heard of Waymo, it’s a...

When Sears Was Amazon

I watched a video the other day of a house being built in the 40s that was sold by Sears and sent by mail order to the buyer. A house! Do you realize we used to live in a country where people had the wherewithal to look at a picture of a house in a catalog and say,...

Tadpole’s Glory

I lived in Carmel, Indiana, for 12 years. It was a lovely place, filled with roundabouts and art. It often lands on those Top 10 Places to Live lists that magazines publish annually to sell grass seed and kitchen redesigns. It has good schools, low...

The Community Disorganzier

Someday I’m going to retire. Not from doing this, hopefully. But from my day job. And I’ve been thinking about what I might want to do in retirement. I know I need to find something to keep me busy to avoid being assigned copious house chores. Or, Heaven forbid,...

A Major Holiday or Three

Today is the confluence of three major events! It should be a national holiday, and as you know from last week, I tried to discuss this with my Congress Mammal to no avail. But I am undaunted. Mostly because I have no idea where I left my daunts. I’m starting to think...
