Have you ever had a Facebook “friend” suggestion that made you scratch your head? One of those weird, out-of-the-blue suggestions that makes you wonder what is going on in the algorithm that made Facebook think I should be friends with that person?

Sometimes it’s obvious because you have mutual friends. And sometimes the suggestion has no mutual friends. You’re curious, so you click on the profile to see what you have in common. Things like work, sports, the fear of widths (or is that just me). And sometimes, you can’t find anything.

Now, I’m not talking about the scammers that reach out to you to be “friends.” I’m talking about the ones that Facebook suggests based on all that data they collect from our scrolling and posting habits.

Well, yesterday I got one of the craziest suggestions ever. I won’t say the actual name, but it was for a founding member of Blue Öyster Cult! And no, it wasn’t a suggestion to like the band page or a fan page of that member. It was his actual personal Facebook page. I’m not making that up at all!

I have no idea how. I’ve never mentioned them, that I recall. I don’t follow their band page. I do occasionally mention Godzilla, and of course they had the 70s hit Godzilla. I don’t have much of their music, but maybe a couple of songs on Apple Music. Who knows, maybe he’s a subscriber? If that’s the case, thanks for your support!

I didn’t send the suggested friend request, since I really don’t know this guy. But I do wonder how Facebook thought we should connect. Am I that out there? You would tell me, wouldn’t you?

Carry on, Citizens!
