My niece is getting ready to move to Indiana from California. She’s in for a bit of a culture shock. Yesterday we got over an inch of snow. She has never had to scrape ice off a car windshield. But she’s ready for the challenge.

Our youngest son is about the same age as her. Two years ago, he moved to Hawaii. He had no job, nowhere to live, and no transportation when he got off the plane. He managed to sort all three out in less than a week. Prior to that, he had never lived on his own.

People thrive, grow, and/or learn, when they dive in. When I got married, I became an instant stepdad to three kids in high school, middle school, and elementary school. I learned a lot that first year. For example, you can’t fire kids when they don’t do what you want. Okay, maybe I’m a bad example. I didn’t so much as thrive as hold on for dear life. But I made it and look at me now! Sure, I’m deranged, but not any more than when I went into it!

The point is you have to try things. A little less fear. A little more boldness. There are seven more weeks in this year. What have you been putting off? Time to dive in.

Carry on, Citizens!
