Today I read that a Japanese apparel company has created the “Pajama Suit.” It’s a pajama collection that looks like a business suit from the waist up. It comes in men’s and women’s versions.
The cost is $50 (or 4,999 yen). They only ship in Japan at this point, but I’m sure they will be available in the US soon. At first, you might be thinking, “who would actually buy something like this.” Well, people bought pet rocks and Spice Girls albums too. People will buy anything!
You may also be thinking, “I can pick out a pair of pajama bottoms to match a blazer from my own closet. I don’t need to buy a pajama suit.” You, of course, would be wrong.
For centuries people have relied on fashion designers to tell us what to wear. They are the gatekeepers of style who keep us from mixing plaids with polka dots (unless that’s on trend this year) or wearing white after Labor Day (or is it after Cinco de Mayo, I can’t remember).
So, we can’t possibly be expected to determine these things on our own. It would be fashion anarchy! And judging by my closet, I would say the anarchists are winning.
Of course, I haven’t been mixing suits and pajamas. I’ve been so 2019 in my work at home attire. Pants with shirts. Pajama bottoms with pajama tops. To the Japanese, I may as well be wearing a fanny pack and sporting a mullet.
So, if the Japanese say we must wear Pajama Suits, then so be it. I just hope that when the American version is produced, they don’t look as silly as the tuxedo t-shirts.
Carry on, Citizens!
